ROMAN GLASS JAR WITH HEAVY ENCRUSTATION
This most attractive jar was excavated in Syria and is dated to the 1st - 3rd century AD, the Roman Period. The vessel measures 4.5 cm in height with a circumference of 12.6 cm. The jar is a light green color with a heavy dirt encrustation on the exterior and interior. The squat body grows to a restricted neck and a slightly flared lip. The bottom is flat and there is much iridescence under the encrustation. Shipping is free and the cracks that one sees on the surface are only on the encrustation, not in the glass. The jar is in excellent condition.

The earliest true glass dates from ca. 2500 BC and was discovered in Mesopotamia. The people of the Roman Empire used more glass articles than any other ancient civilization. Glass vessels were commonplace by the 1st century AD. They would generally have a pleasant amber, blue or green tinge although clear glass was not unknown.
