Mid 19th C Opaline Hand Gilt Glass Egg Brass Stand

From the 18th Century, elaborate Glass Eggs were popular among European Royalty, and eventually became the rage among the general public. By the mid-19th Century, decorative glass eggs were at their height of popularity.

This precious little hand-gilt egg is one of those glass eggs created by and for those outside of the Court. The egg, itself, is of thin, white opaline, mouthblown of course, with a cartouche of tiny flowers, leaves and vines. The verso of the egg is not forgotten, and has a small floral scene with butterfly; tiny sharp pontil at small end. The egg sits nicely in a solid brass "nest" stand, with three shell feet. Both the egg and the stand are unmarked, although we believe they are probably French. The egg, alone, measures about 2.75" x 1.50" (6.98 x 3.81 cm), and the stand is about 2.50" (6.35 cm) diameter at the base. Some wear to the gilt; otherwise excellent condition. c. 1840-1860. $8 US Shipping.
